July 2: Some days it feels like the meanness in the world is winning. It’s hard to have courage in the face of that.
When my courage falters, the thing I need most is community. That’s why I’m so incredibly grateful you’ve joined me for the long and bumpy ride of bringing The Widow’s Guide to Dead Bastards into the world. In just four weeks, we’ll cross the finish line!
Today’s post is a celebration of the ways we help each other do hard (and sometimes fun) things. This was June, 2024.(I’ve edited to remove a photo of my son, but still want to celebrate that he graduated from his school last week!)
When you publish a vulnerable memoir, not only do you see how the sausage is made, sometimes it’s made from parts of you. Sometimes it’s made from parts of people you love. Not everyone is going to meet you with gentleness and compassion, so you have to trust that gentleness and compassion will be a byproduct of the thing you’re putting into the world.
Every time we lift each other out of fear and despair and back into courage, we make the world better. Love can still win, my friends. It can.
Your last words make me think of this poem by Emily Dickinson. It always give me hope.
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
I just found you and preordered the book and CANNOT WAIT to read!!! Hope you have a terrific launch and wonderful success.
